Best of the White Mountains 2023 - Best Non-Profit

We are thrilled to be named Best of the White Mountains 2023 - Best Non-Profit by the residents of the White Mountains. This honor from our community validates the hard work and passion we pour into our horse and donkey rescue in Snowflake, Arizona. It motivates us to continue our mission, strengthening the bond with those we serve. Thank you for your trust and support; it fuels our commitment to making a difference.

At A Home For Every Horse, we are honored to work with amazing sponsors who support the rescues, sanctuaries and care facilities that sign up for our program. The day-to-day cost in helping rehabilitate and rehome rescue horses can be steep, and we can’t thank our sponsors enough for providing them with essential goods, gear, feed and more. Earlier this year, Absorbine donated an incredible care package to Equine Well Being out of Snowflake, Arizona. Thank you, Absorbine, for making a difference in the lives of the animals we love.

In 2018, Equine WellBeing, a rescue located in Snowflake, Arizona, contacted A Home For Every Horse asking for assistance. A catastrophic drought had parched the area, and without water sources, a nearby band of wild horses was in imminent danger. A Home For Every Horse sponsor Tractor Supply Co. stepped up to help. With Tractor Supply’s donation of gift cards, Equine WellBeing was able to purchase galvanized stock tanks to place in locations the mustangs were known to frequent. Thanks to support from White Mountain Water Hauling, the stock tanks were filled and the horses were saved from dehydration. Thank you to Tractor Supply and Equine WellBeing for making a difference.

Equine WellBeing Volunteers

What it means to be a horse rescue volunteer

Most of the stories I have read have been by the rescue about a volunteer. I thought I would give a different perspective of what it means to me to be a horse rescue volunteer. When I started at Equine Wellbeing Rescue I thought it would be great place to gain experience with animals of different sorts. I first thought it might be was a scary place filled with abused and neglected horses or donkeys. I was wrong, I now know it is so much more than that. It is a place of recovery and love. You get to watch an animal regain its strength, courage and confidence. And it has given me the opportunity to show these animals unconditional love and gain their trust and that respect makes every moment I spend volunteering worthwhile.

Poco & Teddy

LEGENDS OF THE WHITE MOUNTAINS

In the tranquil landscapes of Snowflake, nestled in the heart of Arizona's White Mountains, a tale of survival and friendship unfolds. It's a story that tugs at the heartstrings and resonates with the enduring spirit of Poco in a harsh world.

Poco, a wild burro, was born with a deformed back hoof, missing a bone he was supposed to have inside his foot—an affliction that left him abandoned by his herd. He was forced to navigate the treacherous desert landscape alone, with coyotes, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes lurking at every turn.

The pain of being left behind weighed heavily on Poco. The endless days under the relentless sun, the bitter cold, unforgiving nights, and the ever-present danger of predators forged his character. His deformed hoof twisted into a cruel circle, making each step a painful and arduous journey. But Poco possessed an indomitable will to survive, and survive he did, for nearly twelve years, alone in the unforgiving wilderness.
